The best time to visit Romania is…anytime!

Romania is beautiful and has something to offer all year round. We put together a list of 49 places to visit in Romania. From music festivals in summer to ski slopes in winter. From a castle filled with history to a new mountain peak waiting to be conquered. And the list can go on.

If you are a winter sports enthusiast, of course, is best to go in winter. But, if you are looking for sunny days, mild temperatures, seaside, exploring and fun, go when the weather is more pleasant – from March to September.

Jordan lived in Bucharest for some time and loved the summer weather and the people:
“I lived in Bucharest for a couple of months, so what I can say is that working online from here has been great, to be honest; the internet in Romania is insane. In terms of weather, in Bucharest, in the summer the weather was beautiful and I really loved it…so for me, what I’d suggest is Bucharest would be a great place to live in the summer months.
The people there have been very friendly to me. I found Romanian people to be incredibly welcoming and friendly.”

Bottom line, Romania travel is always a good idea, because regardless of the season, you will not get bored. There is always something to do in this country!

If you need anything, don’t hesitate in asking the locals

Did you hear about the Romanian hospitality? Well, you should know that Romanians are extremely friendly and eager to help, especially when it comes to people visiting their country. Don’t be shy in asking for directions or advice. English is widely spoken among the youth, so no language barrier will stop you from connecting with people around.

Amy & Nathan spent some time in the city of Brasov and were impressed by the people and the area they visited:

“We loved Romania, found the people friendly, the prices affordable, and the scenery beautiful. We spent most of our time in Brasov and it was the perfect, charming European town. For visitors from afar, you can feel confident knowing that English is spoken fairly widely here. We had no problem communicating in cafes, shops, and restaurants, and the locals were patient with our attempts to speak Romanian as well! We loved visiting castles in the area, Bran and Peles, but especially loved just exploring the streets of Brasov.”

People all around the country are warm and welcoming, and this is the main reason why Inma from A World to Travel visited Romania not less than six times in the past years. With so many visits, he is surely someone who can give some of the best Romania travel advice:

“After six trips to Romania over the past 6 years, if there is anything I can say out aloud is that this country has stolen my heart. And the main cause of this is its people. Very warm, generous and cheerful, I find many common features in Romanians that the Spanish also have. […]”

Take time to explore the capital city of Romania

A city of contrasts in all terms, from people to buildings and lifestyle, Bucharest should be explored by anyone who plans on visiting Romania. And if you are not convinced yet, here’s what Sally from Passport & Plates has to say about this city:
“Bucharest was by far one of the most surprising cities I’ve visited. It’s a city of contrasts, perfectly blending its history into its present and future. One of my favourite things about it was that the city displays the history: the ornate government buildings, the gritty remnants of Communism, and the street art; the walls alone tell countless stories.”

Now that you added Bucharest on your Romania travel list, don’t miss your chance to visit the Palace of the Parliament. Although it was built during the communist regime and its size and grandeur are a materialization of Ceausescu’s classic dictator ego, the building remains one of Bucharest’s symbols.

Daneger and Stacey visited the Palace and were truly impressed:

“In Bucharest, there’s one building you can’t miss – The Palace of the Parliament. It’s incredibly well known and puts Romania on the map with its crazy stories about how the Palace came to be, what now makes it the People’s Palace and its link to the Parliament. TopGear UK came to Bucharest with supercars and took them below the Palace, in the hidden 20km worth of tunnels, and raced them under the parliament building. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Romania.”

Wondering what else Bucharest has to offer? Well, besides nice people, beautiful weather, and landmarks, you can also find delicious food and fun places. And the actual good news is that you can find it all in one place – the famous Old City. Nicola was pleasantly surprised by this place, and here’s his Romania travel experience:

“I felt safe and secure. Romanian people were warm and friendly and eager to impress tourists. The Old Town has an unmistakable air of Paris about it. I have never experienced anything quite like it but in Paris itself, so if you are looking for Parisian vibes without the price tag, then I highly recommend Bucharest. I honestly fell in love with Romania and I am already chomping at the bit to go back.”

Don’t miss the historical regions – each has something unique to offer.

Maramures, Transylvania, Bucovina and others – you will find all in a good Romania travel guide, but where should you start first? Well, you should visit Romania more than once and truly enjoy each of these regions.

Keep in mind that a weekend getaway will not give you sufficient time to discover the gems in Romania’s historical regions. Nevertheless, it should be just enough to recharge your batteries and to have a taste of the place’s authenticity. But be careful, because for sure you will want to come back for more!

Kylee and Mark visited Maramures and he says “we loved our time in the region, and across Romania as a whole; and hope to get back to your wonderful country in the near future to explore in even more depth. Introducing the world to places such as Romania, that don’t get enough attention, is one of the reasons we started our website in the first place.”

Sarah from fernwehsarah.com spent two weeks inTransylvania, and she was extremely surprised by what she discovered:

“Typically, when people plan a trip across Europe they always focus on big metropolises in Western Europe. And thus, they completely miss some of the hidden gems of Eastern Europe like Romania. And I have to be honest – I was so ignorant for quite a long time as well. This year I finally grabbed the chance and went on a trip to Romania for two weeks. Or more precisely: To Transylvania. And what I found, really amazed me! Not only is Romania an incredibly welcoming and friendly country – it was also naturally beautiful.

Before visiting I couldn’t have imagined all these cute little towns, nestled among green valleys, impressive mountains, blooming lavender and sunflower fields! We visited stunning medieval castles and citadels, indulged in a wine spa, and shot lots and lots of beautiful photos. No question, Romania is one of these hidden gems that is not yet overrun by tourists. But it might change as soon as people realize how much this country has to offer in terms of nature, culture and history. So better go now before everyone else realizes that there’s so much more to discover than only stories about vampires!”

Gregorio, who visits the country on a regular basis, can bring more light into the specifics of Romania’s different regions:

“[…] little by little I have been uncovering the multiple regions that make this country unique. Even on the periphery of Europe, traces of the Parisian boulevards can be found in Bucharest, Alpine constructions in Bucovina, Central European castles and palaces in Transylvania, bird havens in the Danube Delta, electronic festivals worth attending, and gorges that seem to be located in Morocco among many other gems. I dare you to discover it, Romania has something for everyone!”

Plan ahead your routes and means of transportation

When it comes to Romania travel advice, and this applies to any vacation destination, one of the key points that you should cover is your itinerary.
The easiest way of getting around Romania and discover all the hidden treasures and the less visited places is definitely by car. Hiring a car is more expensive than using a train or a bus, but the extra price comes with lots of advantages:

  • You will not be conditioned by a certain timetable, as you can drive around whenever you please.
  • You will be able to get to places that are not reachable by train or by bus.
  • You can stop anytime and admire the scenery in places that catch your eyes.

Public transportation is always an option, but keep in mind that Romania has some minuses in this area, so you might want to plan ahead if you don’t want any unpleasant surprises during your vacation:
“[…]It is a little bit difficult to get around by yourself without hiring a car so I wish there was more information in English and better transport links … but this may come in time.”, says Jordan.

The road from a visit to a love story passes through Romania

All of the people who visit Romania say that this is a country where you can find a little something for everyone. Charming historical cities like Cluj, Brasov and Sibiu, or the bustling and energetic Bucharest, beautiful castles, cultural landmarks – all settled in breathtaking landscapes and surroundings. All of these, combined, make the true Romanian travel experience.
And if you are still not convinced, take a look at the opinions of these travel bloggers about Romania:

“To me, Romania is the biggest hidden gem of Europe as it’s one of the only countries that offers endless authentic experiences and activities for every kind of traveler. Whether you’re into history, stunning nature, hiking and camping, village life, vibrant cities, food, local crafts, unique churches, impressive castles, a traditional countryside or relaxing by the sea, you can find it all in this country. As tourism continues to grow, and the level of service offered improves with it, Romania will certainly rise to the top of desired destinations to visit.”Derek Earl

“I loved Romania because it is utterly unique. A magical undiscovered world hidden deep in Europe with treasures and secrets to explore. Trapped in time, maybe a travel cliché, but in Romania you can step back into medieval castles, primordial forests, wander cobblestone streets or visit wooden towns where horse and carts are still the main form of transportation. Romanians are hospitable, welcoming of foreigners, and curious to learn more about those who adventure into their mysterious land. I loved the food, the culture, the scenery and the nightlife […]”Jordan Adkins
