We’ll also have a nice stop in Biertan – UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the most fortified churches in Transylvania. In Sighisoara we’ll have a pleasant stroll through the narrow pebbled streets, up on the hill, between the fortified walls and towers.
We’ll learn about Vlad’s childhood and teenage years, his great deeds and his conflict with the Saxons in Transylvania. We’ll even have the chance to have lunch in the house where he was supposedly born! That’s a unique experience!
In the afternoon we’ll visit a real pearl of the Transylvanian heritage: the fortified church and the village of Viscri – an amazing place promoted by Prince Charles himself. On our way back to Sibiu we’ll go through the Hartibaciu Valley – here you’ll get a sense of beyond Transylvania.

Day
Day
This is probably the most intriguing day! Today we visit the famous Bran Castle. So many stories have been told so far about the frightening castle so, this is the perfect occasion to learn more about Vlad the Impaler….or Dracula…or both?
Who was this mysterious prince, how did he become so famous in the medieval times and what made him the most terrifying character in the history of Transylvania? His story is really astonishing and the castle…well, we’ll let you discover and explore it! In the after-noon we’ll have a short tour in Brasov – we’ll learn about Dracula’s love story and the conflict he constantly had with the Saxons in Brasov. It’s going to be a long but interesting day!
Back to Sibiu, dinner/ Accommodation.
It’s going to be a busy but pleasant day. We’ll follow the construction story of two huge communist symbols: a strategic amazing road in the mountains and a water dam, both built by Nicolae Ceausescu. From Transylvania we’ll cross the Carpathian Mountains through the breath-taking Transfagarasan road.
Considered by the famous Top Gear team as “the most wonderful road in the world”. We’ll have a short stop at the glacial lake Balea, at about 2000m altitudes. Lunch: the can have lunch on the bench of the lake, on a terrace. We continue our trip, cross the mountains and get to the famous Vidraru water dam, a great technical work for those times.
Next is the Poenari fortress, the place where Vlad the Impeller used to hide in case of any danger. Depending on the weather conditions, we’ll climb the 1480 steps to the fortress. That’s a great challenge!
Option 1: * Curtea de Argeș – Bucharest As we go on we’ll get to (probably) the first capital of Wallachia, Curtea de Argeș. This town hosts the tombs of the great German kings of Romania and an old political centre. We’ll visit one of the oldest churches in Wallachia and a real masterpiece: the monastery Curtea de Arges, a wonderful religious place with so many legends.
Option 2: * if we don’t stop in Curtea de Arges Târgoviste – Bucharest Târgoviste was, for 3 centuries, the capital of Wallachia, a military, economic and cultural centre. It is an old, picturesque town. We’ll visit the historic area, a museum, a monastery and the famous Chindia Tower (built during the reign of Vlad the Impaler). This is the place where Wallachia was led from for more than 3 centuries, the place where all the great decisions were made.
Day
Day
Today we’ll have a long but interesting walk. We’ll start right in the centre of the capital of Romania in order to better understand the changes our country went through the last centuries.
We’ll have a nice stroll on little narrow streets; we’ll admire, from distance, the amazing Houses of Parliament, the biggest public civil building in the world. If you are interested, we can visit it – thus we’ll have a better view over the communist era in Romania; this is huge palace (out of which we’ll visit only about 5%)
In the after-noon we’ll discover Bucharest as it used to be during the interwar period and the transformation it went through during the communist times. We’ll admire the National History Museum, the National Art Museum, former Royal Palace, and we’ll stop for a delicious cake joined by great stories.
Today we’ll have a panoramic tour of the city and some sights around. Close to the capital we’ll visit the Mogosoaia Palace, a wonderful medieval palace in the “brancovenesc” style with byzantine influences, built on the bench of a big lake. Another attraction of the day will be the Snagov Monastery the place where Vlad the Impaler is supposedly buried. Located on an island, in the middle of a lake, the monastery is famous for the legends that connect it to the mysterious character – Dracula.
Option 1*: On our way back to Bucharest we can stop at the Village Museum and visit some old traditional Romanian households. We’ll have dinner in a traditional Romanian restaurant, Casa Doina.
Option 2*: On our way back we’ll stop at an old monastery and tourist complex, Comana, on a bench of an interesting delta. We’ll have dinner at the Comana restaurant, on the bench of a lake.
